Note from the manufacturer:

The sun, with its ultraviolet rays, continues to become increasingly dangerous to the skin. Cancer risks with frequent long-term exposure are thereby clearly raised. Therefore , we urgently advise those who are outside often, whether for work or play, to use proper sunblock lotions and clothing with UV protection.

Our UV umbrella products with silver-metallic coating are near impervious against the suns harmful rays and therefore offer excellent UV protection certified by the safety standards authority of 50 for head, neck and shoulder areas. Besides, the metallic coating reflects the heat so that it is substantially cooler under our umbrellas than those with conventional untreated fabrics.

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (or UPF) rating system measures the UV protection provided by fabric. It is very similar to the SPF rating system used for sunscreens. A garment with a UPF of 50 only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it blocks 49/50ths or 98% of the UV radiation. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) unlike SPF (Sun Protection Factor) measures both UVA and UVB.
